The best U.S. cities for a menopause retreat
Sun Valley topped Womea's analysis of 73 destinations. A survey of 1,000 women aged 40 and older shows what they want from a retreat and what they would spend.

Sun Valley, Idaho, ranked first in Womea's analysis of 73 U.S. destinations for a menopause retreat. Blowing Rock, North Carolina, and Malibu, California, followed. In a companion online survey of 1,000 U.S. women aged 40 and older, 46.6% said a menopause retreat appealed to them, while 4.2% had attended, booked, or planned one. Womea does not operate or endorse retreats; this is a comparison of destinations and reported preferences.
| Survey response | Share of respondents |
|---|---|
| Interested in a menopause retreat | 46.6% |
| Had attended, booked, or planned a menopause retreat | 4.2% |
Which destinations scored best overall?
Sun Valley led on both wellness and fitness accessibility. Its matched listings equated to 56.8 spas, 85.2 yoga studios, and 85.2 gyms per 10,000 residents of its selected anchor town, the highest calculated rates in the study. Blowing Rock ranked second for wellness and fitness accessibility and 11th for women's health access. Malibu ranked first for women's health access, 35th for wellness, and 60th for fitness accessibility.
These are comparative study rates, not a literal count of services available to every 10,000 local residents. Business listings for a region and OB-GYNs within a 25-mile search radius were divided by an anchor town's population. A small denominator can produce unusually large rates. Which destinations lead for wellness, fitness, and healthcare?
Sun Valley had the highest calculated concentrations of spas, yoga studios, and gyms. Malibu led the women's health measure with 1,163.9 OB-GYN listings within 25 miles per 10,000 residents of its anchor town. That number is a result of the study's mismatched geographic numerator and denominator, not an estimate of providers serving 10,000 Malibu residents or proof of appointment availability.

What do women actually want from a menopause retreat?
Rest topped the wish list. In the survey of 1,000 women aged 40 and older, 56.3% chose spa services, 53.1% chose uninterrupted sleep, and 52.9% chose stress-reduction sessions. Temperature-controlled rooms mattered to 48.7%. Hot flashes and night sweats can contribute to poor sleep, as the National Institute on Aging explains.

| Spa services | 56.3% |
| Uninterrupted sleep | 53.1% |
| Stress-reduction sessions | 52.9% |

Where do women dream of going, and what would they pay?
Lānaʻi, Hawaii, led the wish list at 24.9%, just ahead of the Big Island at 24.7%. For a three-night retreat with a private room, meals, and wellness activities, respondents' average maximum spend was $648 and the median was $500. The survey did not establish why interest and attendance differ, so cost should be viewed as a possible consideration rather than a proven cause.

| Destination | Share of respondents |
|---|---|
| Lānaʻi, Hawaii | 24.9% |
| Big Island, Hawaii | 24.7% |
| Asheville, North Carolina | 14.6% |
| Aspen, Colorado | 14.5% |
| Sedona, Arizona | 13.3% |
| Palm Beach, Florida | 10.1% |

How do you choose a retreat that will feel restorative?
Start with what you want to feel different when you return. If sleep is the main problem, a private room, temperature control, and a quiet schedule may matter more than the number of classes. If movement helps you feel better, walkability and access to yoga or a gym may matter more.
- Ask about the room. Confirm temperature controls, a quiet location, and blackout curtains if you need them.
- Leave space in the schedule. A trip can feel like another list of appointments if every hour is programmed.
- Check what 'wellness' means. A spa, a yoga studio, and licensed medical care are different services.
- Look beyond the headline price. Transportation, resort fees, treatments, and meals may be extra.
- Protect time for rest. Uninterrupted sleep and time alone are valid trip priorities.
The bottom line
Sun Valley topped this ranking because it combined high calculated concentrations of spas, yoga studios, and gyms. Blowing Rock offered another strong overall balance, while Malibu stood out on the regional OB-GYN listing measure. The survey points to sleep, privacy, stress relief, and temperature control as common priorities. The best choice for an individual may differ from the study's top-ranked destination.
Methodology and limitations
Fractl evaluated 73 U.S. destinations for Womea. Yelp API results supplied spa, yoga studio, and gym listings; Healthgrades supplied OB-GYN listings within a 25-mile search radius; U.S. Census Bureau data supplied each destination's city or anchor-town population. For regions spanning multiple towns, listings were filtered to businesses within the region. Unique matched addresses were counted by category, then divided by the selected population to express a rate per 10,000 residents.
Each underlying rate was independently min-max normalized to a 0–100 scale across the 73 destinations. The categories were wellness (spas and yoga studios), fitness accessibility (gyms), and women's health (OB-GYN listings within 25 miles). The materials supplied with the draft did not specify the exact category weights used to combine these into the overall rank. Regional business counts and the 25-mile provider search do not share the anchor town's population boundary. The resulting rates are comparison measures, not population-matched estimates of local access, clinical quality, appointment availability, or retreat quality.
The companion online survey was fielded September 9–15, 2026, among 1,000 women aged 40 and older in the United States. Of these respondents, 943 (94%) identified as perimenopausal, menopausal, or postmenopausal. The draft reports 95% margins of error of ±3.1 percentage points for the full sample and ±3.2 points for the 943-person group. Recruitment and weighting details were not supplied, so these findings should be read as descriptive survey results rather than probability estimates for all U.S. women.
